DESCRIPTION:
For my Sophomore Inspire Week, I volunteered with the Adaptive Sports Association for 3 days. During that time, I was able to work with different students from Escalate Middle School, Park Elementary, and Riverview Elementary along with an adult instructor. Each day, we would work with one student on different aspects of skiing that they wanted to learn. Some kids would simply be working on learning how to turn or stop. Other students were advanced enough to do laps on the 6 pack. Every day was catered to the students needs and made sure that they had fun no matter what. Even though I was not able to do everything, I learned all about the different gear required and how to solve different problems that came up. I also learned how to teach skiing techniques to kids with both mental and physical disabilities. |

Advice to Future Students-
What advice do you have to future students about how to make the most out of their Sophomore Inspire Week experience? One of my biggest pieces of advice is to be engaged with whatever experience you end up doing. When we were signing up for the different projects, I had a lot of apprehension about each project and was surprised when I got to work with ASA. I immediately wasn’t sure if I was ready to do it and was ready to shut down if I felt too out of my element. However, when I got there I realized that the best thing for me to do was to be as engaged and active as possible. By putting myself out there and being OK with going out of my element, I made my experience so much better. Instead of just waiting for direct instructions, I took incentive, asked questions, and did everything I could to help my instructor and student. By being so engaged, I was never bored but constantly having fun and gaining new learning experiences. |
